The West Loggia at Whitemarsh Hall was designed with travertino stone to recreate the modelled "frost" work found on the Cascade Temple fountain at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, England.

The Cascade fountain was built at Chatsworth in 1696 through a design by Monsieur Grillet, the French hydraulics engineer for King Louis XIV. The first Duke of Devonshire commissioned the project and engaged architect Thomas Archer to add the Cascade Temple at the top of the cascade (shown in the distance in the center of the photo) in about 1702. The cascade water flow was powered entirely by gravity from higher elevation ponds to the east, and it eventually supplied all the water required to feed the large ornamental sea horse fountains in the south tapis vert lawn of the estate (to the right from the photo). The temple featured stone carvings of dolphins and modelled "frost" work on the stone joints of the temple edifice. The Cascade more recently was placed under renovation due to significant structural damage over the centuries. Photo source: English Gardens, by H. Avray Tipping, Country Life Ltd., London, 1925 |
